Horizon Forbidden West Guide: Everything We Know So Far

Horizon Forbidden West marks Aloy’s next chapter, as she bursts back onto both PS5 and PS4 next month. Set half-a-year following the events of Horizon Zero Dawn, the star of the show is this time heading west to once more save the world from dangers unknown. In round two of Aloy’s expected death-defying quest, expect more of the same as laid out in the first game, this time with new weapons, abilities, friends, foes, and, yikes, robotic dinosaur baddies.

While Horizon Forbidden West was expected late last year, publisher Sony and developer Guerilla Games pushed the due date to February 2022 to ensure the game that ships are the very best it can be. Time will tell if that’s the case or not, but Horizone Forbidden West is one of the most anticipated upcoming PS5 games of this year in any event.

Horizon Forbidden West release date

During Gamescom Opening Night Live 2021, Horizon Forbidden West game director Mathijs de Jonge revealed that the upcoming adventure is now releasing on February 18, 2022.

This new release date pushes the game back from its initial 2021 launch window. Jonge spoke about how the team has been “hugely impacted the global pandemic” during development: “We’ve been adjusting to new workflows and other challenges,” Jorge said, “while keeping our team safe and prioritizing a healthy work-life balance.”

Sony and Guerrilla have also confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West will arrive on PS4 and PS5 when it launches next year.

Horizon Forbidden West is a PS5 exclusive (and also coming to PS4)

At least for now, if you want to play Horizon Forbidden West when it’s released, you’ll need a PS5 – or a PS4. Though it’s worth noting that its predecessor, Horizon Zero Dawn, is now out on PC, there are no guarantees Horizon Forbidden West will follow the same path.

“To maybe put a few minds at ease, releasing one first-party AAA title to PC doesn’t necessarily mean that every game now will come to PC,” Herman Hulst, Head of PlayStation Worldwide Studios, said at the time. “In my mind, Horizon Zero Dawn was just a great fit in this particular instance. We don’t have plans for day and date [PC releases], and we remain 100% committed to dedicated hardware.”

“With the PS5’s SSD, there will be virtually no loading screens,” game director Mathijs de Jonge said in a recent dev diary, echoing sentiments from system architect Mark Cerny as well as several other PS5 developers. “In an open-world game like Horizon Forbidden West, if you open up the map and fast travel from one end to the other, or restart from a checkpoint, it will be super fast. When you boot up the game, you’re right there in the action.”

Interestingly, de Jonge has also said that “a lot of the development has taken place on the PlayStation 4, and a lot of playtesting is also done on PlayStation 4. So we are ensuring that owners of that console have a great experience and that the game will look fantastic on that console.”

Anyone who buys the game on PS4 will also be able to take advantage of a free PS5 upgrade for the game whenever they’re ready to make the new-gen leap.
